Definition |
Acute Viral infection of the meninges and spinal fluid, mostly afflicting the young. |

Prognosis |
A benign disease with complete recovery. Deafness could be a complication. |

General Measures |
Adequate hydration, and electrolyte balance to be maintained. Control fever as indicated. |

Advice to Patient |
Reassure about the usual benign nature of illness. Small possibility of spread to close contacts and hence minimize close contact. |
|
|
Inadequate Response |
Very unusual disease in elderly, and if diagnosed consider alternative diagnosis like Carcinomatous meningitis. |
|
|
Prevention |
Avoid close contact with the patient. Isolate the patient for 24 hours after start of therapy. Thorough washing of hands by patient\'s attendants. |
